Officer Arrested and Charged with DWI After Accident
An off-duty cop from Jersey City, New Jersey critically injured a woman and her child in a car accident and has been charged with DWI. Police investigators report that Officer Kevin Freibot was drunk when he collided with Ruth Zelaya’s vehicle. Zelaya and her young son were injured in the accident Zelaya was rushed to the intensive care unit of Jersey City Medical Center, and the young child was admitted to the University Hospital in Newark. The accident investigation and internal affairs units of the police department are investigating the incident. The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office is also involved in the investigation.
This is not the first time that Freibott has been questioned about a traffic accident. He was let go from the Middletown Township Police Department in 2001 after he was involved in a minor accident near the Atlantic Highlands tavern and failed to have a valid driver’s license. His driving record also includes three license suspensions. In 1988, he was charged with DWI. Later he did not attend his required drunk driving program and did not pay the mandatory fines. Between the years 1986 and 2001 he was cited for careless driving, speeding and driving without a license. He has been involved in at least seven accidents.
