Air Pollution May Damage Women's Hearts

A study in the New England Journal of Medicine reveals that women living in places with elevated air pollution have an increased risk of heart disease and death. The pollution responsible for this elevated risk consists of invisible particles from traffic fumes, coal burning power plants and wood fires. The study indicates that the correlation of heart disease and the level of air pollution is much higher than originally thought. Researchers are hoping that this will bring greater attention to the dangers of air pollution. “Our findings show that both what city a woman lived in and where she lived in that city affected her exposure level and her disease risk,” said Kristin Miller, on of the authors of the paper from University of Washington.

Air Pollution Raises Risk of Heart Disease in Women

The study looked at information from 65,000 people between the ages of 50 to 79, in 36 cities across the United States. In the beginning, none of the woman showed signs of heart disease. However, after only nine years 1,816 had experienced a heart attack or stroke, needed heart bypass surgery or died because of cardiovascular failure. Scientists compared this data to the air quality at each of the woman’s homes. They discovered not only a connection, but it appears that “the magnitude of health effects may be larger than previously recognized.”

Sources of the air pollution in the study included automobile exhaust, coal burning power stations, wood burning stoves, and industrial plants. The most dangerous type of air pollution consists of tiny particles of soot and dust in the air. The particulate matter cannot be seen by the unaided eye, and can cause a haze over a city. Joel Kaufman, a professor of environmental and occupational health sciences, epidemiology and medicine said, “These soot particles, which are typically created by fossil-fuel combustion in vehicles and power plants, can contain a mix of chemicals. The tiny particle – and the pollutant gases that travel along with them – cause harmful effects once they are breathed in.” This contributes to increasing evidence that air pollution may be a serious risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

Motorcycle Accident Causes Death of Legislator's Son

A motorcycle accident in St. Augustine, Florida resulted in the death of the son of Legislator Teresa Sayward. Kyle Sayward, crashed his 2006 Harley-Davidson motorcycle while driving on U.S. Route 1 in St. Autustine, Florida. He had been in Georgia working in a construction project and had gone to St. Augustine for the weekend. Marion Ronn, a passenger on the motorcycle, was rushed to the hospital in serious condition and was treated at the Shands Hospital trauma unit. Both Sayward and Ronn were not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. The law in Florida requires that motorcycle riders to wear helmets unless they have nearly $10,000 in medical coverage.

Legislator’s Son Dies in Accident

Police investigators believe that Sayward was driving north on Route 1 and most likely lost control of the motorcycle. He appeared to be driving below the 45 miles per hour speed limit and possibly hit a curb tossing both occupants off the motorcycle. Sayward was taken to the Flagler Hospital with traumatic head injuries. He passed away while undergoing emergency treatment. “It’s hard to imagine something like that happening. He had a small son. Our hearts go out to the family,” said Essex County District Attorney Julie Garcia.

A chain-reaction accident caused by whiteout conditions near Erie, Pennsylvania involved over 50 vehicles, including an ambulance with patients. The accident occurred between the Wesleyville and Harborcreek exits, east of Erie. Officials report that only one person was killed, but they have not determined the actual cause of death. Interstate 90, near Lake Erie, was closed for many hours in order to give emergency personnel time to respond to the accidents. Many people received minimal injuries, and as many as 22 tractor-trailers and tanker trucks were also involved in the accident.

Consumer Reports Car Seat Findings Withdrawn

The popular magazine, Consumer Reports, announced that it will not be standing by its report on rear-facing infant car seats because of problems in the way the tests were conducted. The report, released in early January, alleged that many infant car seats failed crash tests administered using higher standards then those used by the federal government’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Since then, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration questioned Consumer Reports side impact test procedure. “Our initial review of the Consumer Reports testing procedures showed a significant error in the manner in which it conducted and reported on its side-impact tests,” said Nicole Nason, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration administrator.

Consumer Reports Recalls Car Seat Study

According to Nason, the data indicated that the side-impact tests were conducted in such a way that it would “represent being struck in excess of 70 mph, twice as fast as the group claimed.” A spokesperson with Consumer Reports said that they will be conducting new side-impact tests analyzing all aspects of the article. They will also conduct an internal review. In the initial report, Consumer Reports tested 12 infant car seats including models made by Evenflo, Graco and Baby Trend. They originally determined that 10 did not provide adequate protection for babies. They promise to issue a new report with “any necessary revisions” as soon as possible.

Police Still Investigating Hit-And-Run

Pittsburgh police investigators are following up on leads in a hit-and-run accident where a young boy was injured. The incident occurred around rush hour on Andrew Avenue, north of Power Avenue, according to Pittsburgh police Sgt. Rod Dupont. The boy received serious leg injuries and after being stabilized at a local elementary school, he was airlifted to Children’s Hospital Oakland. The child’s injuries are not considered life threatening.

Child Injured in Pittsburg Hit-And-Run

Another hit-and-run accident has a family searching for answers. The accident occurred late last week near the Moultrie Square Publix on U.S. 1 in St. Augustine, Florida. The victim, Dustin Padley, died after being run down by a car while running an errand for his mother. He was standing on the sidewalk when the car hit him. “It was dark. I know that he was walking and had black or dark clothes on and a hood over his head,” said Padley’s mother, Teresa Deloach. The family is even more upset because the car didn’t stop after hitting Padley. Padley pleads,“If you have any kind of courage in you at all, if you’re any kind of man or woman . . . or whoever you are, the best thing you can do is step forward and do the right thing. That’s all I can say - - do the right thing.” Police investigators have determined that the car that hit Padley was most likely an older model sedan, such as a Lincoln. The vehicle most likely will have front-end and windshield damage. The Florida Highway Patrol requests that anyone who has information about this accident call 904-301-3700 ext. 108. The family is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest.

Cell Phone Ignites, Causing Serious Fires and Burns

A serious fire in Vallejo, California was apparently caused by a cell phone igniting in a man’s pocket. The cell phone started a fire which engulfed Luis Picaso’s hotel room and seriously burned him over half of his body. Picaso, age 59, has second-and third-degree burns on his upper body, back, right arm and leg. The Vallejo Fire Department assistant chief, Kurt Henke, reports that Picaso is in stable condition. The firefighters responded to his hotel Saturday evening and found Picaso injured on the floor because a malfunctioning cell phone in his pocket had set fire to his clothing. The fire then spread throughout the room. Investigators have not reported the phone’s manufacturer and model.

A spokesperson with the Vallejo Fire Department, Bill Tweedy said, “There have been a couple other cases in California in the past few years. It’s no different than any other fires involving mechanical or electrical items.” One such incident was reported in June of 2004 when a 16-year-old female received serious burns when the cell phone in her pocket ignited. “The phones get warm after you’ve been talking for a long time and the powerful batteries in them can overheat… [This and other similar accidents] just happe[n] and could happen anytime,” Tweedy said.

Accident Claims the Lives of Three High School Students

Two tragic car accidents in New Jersey resulted in the death of four people including three high school students. Another person was seriously injured. The accidents occurred early in the afternoon on January 10, on Kozloski Road. The students were driving a late model Cadillac CTS when they collided with a minivan. The Cadillac was quickly engulfed in flames, reports Luis Valentin, the government prosecutor who is investigating the accident. The three students who died were from Freehold Borough High School. Investigators identified them as Michael Dragonetti, James Warnock, and Andrew Ludy. An elderly woman, Ruth MacArthur, the driver of the second vehicle, also was killed in the accident.

N.J High School Mourns Students Killed in Crash

Police are still uncertain what caused the deadly series of accidents, but they believe that vehicle speed may have been a contributing factor. The principal of Freehold Borough High School said of the students, “We just want students to share what their instincts say at this moment, what is in their hearts. These students were the best and the brightest of today’s young people. Each had special skills and talents. They were sincere people who embraced life every day as an adventure.” School officials are providing optional grief counseling for students throughout the day January 11.

Sledding Causes Boy's Death; Safety Guidelines

A young boy tragically died in a freak tobogganing accident January 8, 2006. Kasey Thompson was sledding in Gilbert Plains, Canada with his older brother when the accident occurred. The brothers went off a lip and became airborne. When they landed, Kasey suffered a traumatic brain stem injury, which caused his death. The Gilbert Plains region is nearly 360 kilometers north of Winnipeg.

Sledder Died of Brain Injury

Every year, sledding causes thousands of injuries. Some of these injuries are serious enough to cause death. The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons published two sets of guidelines on how to be safe while sledding. The first, labeled essential, are to sled only in designated areas that are free of trees, posts and fences. Also, make sure adults supervise children as they sled. Children should always sit facing forward, leaving their feet free to steer. Never sled down hill headfirst. Avoid sledding on hills that end with streets, ledges, parking lots or bodies of water. The second set of guidelines is labeled preferred. Children under 12 should wear a helmet while sledding. Wear additional layers of clothing to protect against injuries and sled only in well-lit areas.

Idaho Man Still Missing After Helping Out At Accident Scene

A city councilman from Idaho is still missing after he stopped at the scene of a car accident on a bridge. The accident occurred on Interstate 84 east of The Dalles, Oregon. Investigators are worried that he may have jumped into the John Day River to avoid being hit by another car. John Dickinson, from Moscow, Idaho stopped to assist another motorist who had crashed while trying to avoid debris on the interstate bridge. Immediately after Dickinson got out of his car, his own vehicle was hit from behind. Investigators still cannot find him.

Police investigators are suspicious that he may have either fallen off the bridge or jumped the railing in an effort to avoid being hit in the second accident. Search teams are currently looking for Dickinson, but have been unsuccessful so far. The John Day River is 80 feel deep, and about 40 degrees in the area under the bridge. If Dickinson did end up being forced over the guardrail, it will be the second incident since mid-December. Two weeks ago, Brian Bernier from Vancouver, Washington also stopped his vehicle to assist after a crash on a bridge. A passing vehicle then forced him over the bridge guardrail and down a 50 foot drop. Bernier was found dead on the scene.

Morning Dew Causes Series of Morning Accidents

A State trooper with the Wisconsin State Police is taking some time off work after being injured in a rollover accident early in the morning, January 8. Trooper Scott Hlinak, early Sunday morning lost control of his police car on the bridge that crosses a branch of the Fond du Lac River by Military Road. The car crashed through a fence, flipped over and stopped by East Frontage Road. According to Sgt. Brad Seymour of the Wisconsin State Patrol, “He’s doing O.K, He’s off for a couple days because of the injuries.”

Update: Trooper Injured in Accident

This accident was one of many reported to the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Department January 8. The weather in Fond du Lac has been warm for this season, causing the string of accidents. The dew point change combined with the unseasonably warm weather, surprisingly caused the bridges to ice up early in the morning. People did not expect the sudden ice-over on the bridges, so numerous accidents occurred. The roads de-iced by later in the morning.

Serious Accident on I-65 In Indiana

A serious accident on I-65 in Indiana resulted in one person’s death and shut down the interstate for more than six hours. The incident occurred late afternoon on Sunday, January 7 near Lebanon, Indiana. Police investigators report that Theodore Engelbirth, an elderly man from Illinois, stopped his vehicle while in traffic because of an accident investigation. Tragically, a semi-truck hit Engelbirth from behind causing him to careen into bridge supports. Engelberth died, but his wife, and the semi-truck driver went to the hospital with only minor injuries. Boone County Sheriff Ken Campbell appeals to drivers to be vigilant when driving on the interstate. “You’ve got to pay attention. At interstate speed, the velocity you’re traveling a lot of feet in a few seconds, and you’ve got to be aware of that so you can get on the brakes or make an evasive maneuver if you need to.” One of the crucial strategies drivers can use to avoid causing this type of accident is to maintain a safe following distance.

Illinois Man Killed in I-65 Accident

According to Roadtrip America one rule of defensive driving is to “Create Space: Use the ‘Two-Second-Plus Rule’” In order to apply the “Two-Second-Plus Rule” you should watch as the vehicle in front of you passes an stationary object next to the road. Then you begin to count “one-thousand-one, one-thousand-two.” If you pass or arrive at the object before saying “two” then you are dangerously close to the other car. Act defensively and back off. There are also situations where the two-second rule is not enough. You should leave more space when there are adverse weather conditions, the time of day effects visibility, or even if the vehicle you are following has different characteristics than yours, such as a motorcycle, truck or RV. If drivers will be conscious of the space around their vehicle, they will be less likely to cause accidents and may save their own life, or someone else’s.
