Man Will Sue Complete Moisture Plus Manufacturer

Tony Hillier, 60, says that he became a victim of acanthamoeba keratitis after having used Complete Moisture Plus, which is manufactured by Advanced Medical Optics. Hillier had to undergo a corneal transplant two months ago in an attempt to save his left eye. It is not yet known if he will regain vision in that eye.

Hillier developed acanthamoeba keratitis, a rare parasite infection which attacks the nerve endings in the eye, last November. Hillier's surgery required 16 stitches in his eye and he still suffers blurred vision and had to quit his job as a truck driver. Hillier said of the situation: After several weeks of drops in my left eye and no improvement I was in a lot of pain, with blurred vision and a burning sensation. I eventually saw a corneal specialist who told me that I needed a graft to save my eye. The graft was a success but I have been told it is a slow recovery and that the 16 stitches will be in my eye for about a year. It has been a devastating experience for me and I am very worried the condition might come back, also possibility rejection of the new cornea."

AMO, FDA Encouraging Consumers to Dispose of Evidence?

If you have a container of Advanced Medical Optics' Complete Moisture Plus, should you throw it away? Both AMO and the Food and Drug Administration recommend that consumers discard any unused Complete Moisture Plus solution that they still have. However, this action may be of enormous benefit to AMO; consumers essentially are destroying any evidence that they may have had that the contact solution was contaminated.

AMO Urges Consumers to Dispose of Evidence

Some reports indicate that AMO may have been aware of the problems with their solution for two years before they did anything to warn the public. Consumers who believe they have been seriously injured by using Moisture Plus may be well advised to save the solution as evidence.

Complete MoisturePlus Made Life Miserable

Diane Harris spent months trying to find a diagnosis for her eye infection. Finally, she found an opthamologist who was able to diagnose her with Acanthamoeba keratitis. Harris had been using Advanced Medical Optics' Complete MoisturePlus solution for a long time. "I was using the product for about six months before I had symptoms of an eye infection," said Harris.

"My doctor thought I had herpes in my eye and gave me all kinds of different drops, including steroids. Nothing worked. Finally I saw a corneal specialist and he diagnosed me with Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK). He told me that I must have contracted this ocular disease from a swimming pool, hot tub or sauna. That was impossible—I hadn't been near any of them. Then he said there was a slight possibility that I scratched my cornea and water got into it. I never believed this reasoning either," said Harris. Harris is now legally blind in her right eye as a result of the infection. She says that her entire life has been affected.
