MoisturePlus Contact Solution Pulled
Complete Moisture Plus Multi-Purpose Solution, made by Advanced Medical Optics of Santa Ana, California, has been linked to cases of Acanthamoeba keratitis, a potentially blinding eye infection. People who wear soft contact lenses are advised to get rid of any unused solution and to discard their lenses and their storage cases that may have been exposed to the solution. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention says that a definitive link has not yet been established. However, preliminary evidence suggests a seven times greater risk of developing Acanthamoeba keratis for those using the solution as opposed to those who use alternate solutions.
Advanced Medical Optics says that “There is no evidence to suggest that the voluntary recall is related to a product contamination issue and this does not impact any of AMO’s other contact lens care products.” Acanthamoeba keratitis usually affects healthy people who wear contact lenses. While the number of cases of acanthamoeba infection is small, the infection can cause blindness, a need for a corneal implant, or a need for an eye to be removed.
