Lens Solution Recall Hurts Company's Stock
Shares of Advanced Medical Optics fell as investors began to react to the recall of AMO's Complete Moisture Plus contact solution. Investigators from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say that Complete Moisture Plus has been linked to an outbreak of a rare but serious condition known as acanthamoeba keratitis. The infection can cause blindness.
The CDC provided data that 46 people who had developed acanthamoeba keratitis; 21 of these people had used Complete Moisture Plus. Bausch and Lomb's Renu with MoistureLoc contact solution was recalled last year after tests indicated that those who misused the solution were at a higher risk for eye infection caused by a fungus.
