Stafford Man Escapes Crane's Fall

William Huther was driving his pickup in downtown Houston Friday morning, running an errand to pick up the paperwork he needed to become a private investigator. when a cable fell onto it and then a 10,000 pound steel ball flattened the cab of his truck. Huther says of the accident: "I damn near died. If that had been over one foot further, I would have died. Looking at the cab, I don't know how I got out of there with only a scratch on my hand and a bump on my head."

Huther was able to kick open the driver's side door of his truck to escape. Houston police said that no one was injured in the accident. David Harvey, the president and owner of D.E. Harvey Builders, said that the rig was being used to drill holes for foundations. The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration is looking into the accident.
