Construction Accident Knocks Out Media Service for Hours

A construction accident in Raleigh, North Carolina caused almost a quarter of a million Time Warner Cable customers to lose service for nearly four hours. Construction crews were driving a dump truck under a fiber-optic cable when the top of the truck snagged the cable and pulled it loose from a connector box. The television, digital phone and internet service for Raleigh, Cary, Wilson, Goldsboro, Farmville and part of Pitt County were affected. A Time Warner Representative indicated that those affected either lost their service completely, experienced slower than normal internet connections or poor quality on their phone calls.

Construction Accident in Arlington

A couple of construction workers are still in the hospital because of injuries they sustained after concrete fell on a 24-story building construction site in Virginia. A hospital spokesperson reports that one of the workers is in critical condition, while the other is in serious condition. The incident occurred yesterday in Rossyln at a development known as Waterview. Officials report that a section of concrete 25-by-25 foot crashed down after the scaffolding fell away. There were over 200 workers on the building site at the time and over 75 emergency personnel responded to the accident.

Bad Axe Man Killed in Construction Accident

A construction accident in Marlette, Michigan resulted in the death of a man from Bad Axe. John A. Corrion was killed when he was pinned down under a piece of heavy machinery. The incident occurred when he backed a construction roller over the edge of an elevated construction site. The vehicle overturned and pinned Corrion underneath. Emergency officials pronounced him dead on the scene.

Officials from the Michigan State Police, and the Michigan Department of Labor’s Construction, Safety and Health Division are investigating the accident. According to a police spokesperson, Sgt. Barbara Soffin, the incident appears to be an accident. Corrion was a veteran worker, and previously owned his own construction company. He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.

Construction Accident in Jacksonville Seriously Injures Two Men

Two construction workers were critically injured while working on Ameristeel’s property in Jacksonville, Florida. The men received serious injuries when they fell from a high platform, twenty feet above the ground, and landed on the concrete slab platform beneath. One of the construction workers shattered his leg. Both workers were transported to Shand's Hospital .

Construction Accident Causes Death

An accident on Hickory Road in North Attleboro, Massachusetts resulted in the death of an owner of a construction company. Horacio DeBrum from Rehoboth was loading a paving machine on the trailer when the machine fell on him. Rescue officials removed the machine and DeBrum was pronounced dead on the scene.

Accident Closes IH-10 In Texas

A construction accident which occurred late Tuesday afternoon, which forced Texas government officials to close major sections of IH-10. The construction accident occurred when a Texas Department of Transportation cut an overhead utility line. Officials diverted traffic off at Camp Bullis to a frontage road. The highway was opened shortly after repairs were completed.

Construction Accident Causes Death of 18-Year-Old

A tragic construction accident in San Carlos, Florida caused the death of 18 year old, David Vasquez. He was driving a tractor when it rolled down a steep hill into a lake. Mr. Vasquez called for help and then disappeared under the water. The rescue team found Mr. Vasquez after he had been under the water for nearly 30 minutes. He was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Mr. Vasquez had been working for a subcontractor on a home development project for Stock Development when the accident occurred. The rescue team was not able. The incident is still under investigation with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Construction Accident in Bellevue, Washington

A person was killed in a tragic construction accident November 16 in Bellevue, Washington. The
fatality occurred when a 210 foot construction crane crashed down on three buildings. The victim was in an apartment of one of the buildings which were hit. The operator of the crane was also injured, and rescued by emergency workers. The accident and its cause is still under investigation.

The coroner in Montgomery County identified a man killed at a construction site. Thomas Morgan died when he tried to dislodge a tumbler that had jammed. Officials from the Occupational Safety and Hazard Administration have been at the construction site investigating the incident. Morgan was married and has two children.

Safety Violations Result in $100,000 USD in Fines

A company from Tuscaloosa, Alabama was fined more than $100,000 USD for safety violations that caused a construction accident earlier this year. That accident resulted in the serious injury of a construction worker. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) found that the company, Gilco Contracting, failed to give its employees safe entry and exit trenches, and did not build a system to protect against cave-ins. The injury occurred to Francisco Pastelin, who fell into a hole with a trackhoe. His arm was severely injured, and as a result, it needed to be amputated. According to an official with OSHA, “A worker was seriously injured because this employer ignored safe trenching practices and failed to use safety equipment available at the site. Employers must protect employees working in this very hazardous industry.”

The victim, from Perkasie, was working on a hydraulic line when the accident occurred. Police responded to the scene, and after a thorough investigation the death was determined to be an accident.

Construction Accident Causes Power Outage

An accident in Middletown, New York resulted in the loss of power to the whole south part of the city. The outage was caused when a demolition tractor knocked down a utility pole. The wires fell across the tractor causing a minor fire. Construction Worker Dies in Newton, MA

Detailed information has not yet been announced regarding the death of a construction worker in Newton, MA. WCVB TV in Boston reports that Joshua Raskett, from Shrewsbetty, MA died while working at the Chestnut Hill Mall early in the morning on Oct. 23. Officials with the Department of Labor and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are continuing their investigation.

Construction Worker Killed While Setting Up Memorial

Tragically, a semi killed a highway worker as he was putting up a memorial to a fallen state trooper, Officer Jay Sampietro. The officer was killed in 2005 while he was directing traffic. A car swerved and hit Sampietro while it was trying to avoid an accident with another car. A spokesman for the Missouri State Highway Patrol pleaded with drivers that “If you see emergency workers on the road, hit your brakes. Slow down and move over. Get out of the way.”

Construction Accident Under Investigation

According to a report by the Detroit News, a construction accident at a church resulted in a worker's death and injuries to three others. While the South Hill Baptist Church was under construction, several trusses surprisingly became dislodged and fell on the workers. Officials with Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration are still investigating the cause of the accident.
