Two Construction Workers Killed In Queens

Two separate construction accidents in Queens, New York resulted in the deaths of two workers. One worker died after falling five stories from scaffolding. Investigators have termed the incident an accident. In the other accident, a construction worker, was painting the Queensboro Bridge when he fell to his death. Investigators reported he was not wearing a harness.

Tragic Construction Accident in Vietnam

A tragic construction accident in Hanoi Vietnam resulted in the death of seven construction workers. A local residence in south Vietnam was under construction when without warning it collapsed causing fatalities and serious injuries. The tragedy required the diligence of over 100 emergency response officials and 16 hours to recover the bodies. A Preliminary investigation indicates the home’s faulty steel structure may have contributed to the disaster.

Worker on Street Paving Crew Killed

According to a report by the Herald Sun, a construction worker was killed when another worker on a street paving crew hit him while backing up a sprayer truck. The fatality occurred at the corner of Red Oak Street and Lane Avenue in Durham, North Carolina. According to investigators, the “audible warning signs” did not work while the construction vehicle was backing up. A police spokesman indicated that no charges will be filed against the driver. Last year in North Carolina 80 workers died while on the job.

Construction Site Accident in Miami

According to a report by CBS News, a construction worker fell 8 feet from the 12th to the 11th floor of a high-rise under construction. The incident occurred in Miami, on 23 Street and Biscayne Blvd. Emergency rescue workers had to use a crane to get the victim off of the building. The victim was taken to the hospital, having suffered a possibly serious back injury.

Gas Leak in Fredericton

According to a report by CBC, a recent gas leak in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada could have been prevented by a more careful reading of construction maps. The gas leak earlier this week caused the evacuation of a gas station, CBC’s newsrooms, and an elevated state of alert for the city’s hospital. The owner of the gas pipeline, Enbridge Gas, claims that their protocols are in place to avoid pipelines being broken. Unfortunately this is the fourth time in 2006 that an Enbridge Gas pipeline was broken in Fredericton.

Construction Accident Under Investigation

According to a report by the Detroit News, a construction accident at a church resulted in one worker being killed and three others received serious injuries. While the South Hill Baptist Church was under construction, several trusses surprisingly became dislodged and fell on the workers. Officials with Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration are still investigating the cause of the accident.

Bizarre Construction Accident Leaves Family Homeless

According to a report by the Nashua Telegraph, a family is now homeless due to a bizarre construction accident. A construction worker accidentally crashed a 20 foot John Deere excavator into a local home. Fortunately, no one was injured in the accident because the family was out of the house at the time. Details about why the construction worker crashed into the home are still unclear, but it appears that the driver may have had a medical condition. Tragically, the home was completely destroyed and will have to be demolished.

Construction Worker Falls, Sustaining Serious Injuries

According to WTRF, a construction worker was injured when he fell from scaffolding at the construction side for a Whispering Oak housing development. He sustained many serious injuries including fractures in both his leg and foot, and officials suspect a possible back injury. The severity of his injuries has not yet been reported.

Utah Construction Site Accident

According to KUTV, a construction worker died when he lost his footing and fell 60 feet from a framed building under construction in Ogden, Utah. At the time of his fall conditions were very treacherous, as it had rained early that morning. In addition, the victim’s harness was not secured correctly and his shoe tread was worn down. According to police, the victim was moving a sheet of aluminum roofing when he fell.

Contractors Fail to Build To Code

According to a report by ABC news, complaints against general contractors for shoddy construction, including failure to build up to code, is on the rise in Spokane, Washington. Recently, an inspection of a construction project in north Spokane County uncovered six code violations. The Department of Labor and Industry finds that many consumers, inexperienced in construction, simply trust their general contractor when he claims to be following the rules.

In reality, many of those same contractors are failing to build up to code by cutting corners and avoiding safety procedures. In order to avoid potential problems, when planning construction projects consumers who need a general contractor should do adequate research in order to ensure that their building project is executed at appropriate legal and safety standards.

Overpass Collapses in Montreal

According to the AP, an overpass collapsed in Montreal, Quebec killing five people. Prior to the collapse, it appears there may have been some warning of impending problems as reports began to surface that concrete was falling off the overpass and it had sunk a few inches. Although an official with the Canadian Transportation Ministry was dispatched to inspect the overpass, the road remained open to the public. 30 minutes later 65 feet of concrete collapsed, causing both the fatalities and other very serious injuries. A similar accident occured in 2000 and a construction company had failed to secure the concrete beams properly leading to the accident.

Construction Worker Injured in Miami

According to a report by the Miami Herald, a construction worker was injured when a 15-foot metal column fell on her. The injured worker is an ironworker and was working at a high-rise construction site in Miami.

Fortunately, the woman avoided a more serious injury because she was far enough from the column when it fell that it only grazed her. This is the most recent in a series of serious construction accidents in the Miami-Dade County this year.

Two Alleged Construction Violations in Philadelphia

According to a report by the Philadelphia Inquirer, a construction company in Bucks County has been accused of violating two safety procedures, exposing workers to falling risks. The company, E&R Erectors Inc. of Bensalem, was cited by the U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for failing to provide fall protection to construction workers doing structural steel and steel beam connection work. The Bureau of Labor Statistics maintains that falling from heights results in one-third of construction accident fatalities.
